Gourmet mushrooms are choice edibles prized for their flavour. These mushrooms were once only available by foraging, but cultivation techniques have made many of them more readily available as they can now be grown in a controlled environment at any volume.
Cultivating mushrooms not only makes them more accessible to consumers, but ensures food security as production can be controlled and predicted. The positive ecological impact is also significant as natural environments where these mushrooms were traditionally found do not have to be disturbed.
More and more research is being conducted to prove the health benefits of mushrooms. They have been part of the food and medicinal traditions of cultures across the world for thousands of years.
While certain types of mushrooms are very common commercially, other types, like the ones we grow are not, especially in Newfoundland.
